Off the Vine: Show # 32 January 12, 2016
On this week’s episode of Off the Vine on The Drive with Steve Jaxon, Karissa welcomes grapegrower and former SCWC Board Member Charles Karren and his son Christian. Not knowing a soul in Sonoma County, Charles and his wife Diana moved here in 1999. The Karren’s own Terra di Promisio (The Land of Promise) a vineyard planted to Pinot Noir in 2002 in Petaluma. Charles and Diana have a unique story, they struggled during the early years with a failed business plan, but persevered and even teach a course at Sonoma State University on business entrepreneurship. After years of selling their grapes to premier Pinot Noir focused wineries, the Karren Family branched out and decided to make wine of their own in 2013, as encouraged by family and friends.
Next generation grape grower Christian Karren discusses his ambitions of continuing the family legacy of grape growing and winemaking, as well as his 8th grade community service project with the Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue Center that has turned into an initiative to help bring the sustainable vineyard practice of owl boxes to more growers in the county.
