Sonoma County Winegrowers & Sonoma County Grape Growers Foundation is offering six Wildfire Zone Safety Awareness Training for vineyard owners, foreman, maintenance supervisors and crew supervisors. Four of these classes will be offered in English and two will be offered in Spanish. The Ag Commissioner, in addition to current legislation being considered at the state level (AB1103) is working to create a Sonoma County Ag Access Pass that will capture commercial ag operations information in advance of an emergency. This Ag Pass can then be used (when deemed safe) for access during a disaster. This program in conjunction with the Sheriff’s Office requires taking up to four hours of a fire safety training class. If you took the training last August 2020 at the Sonoma County Farm Bureau office, you do NOT need to take it again. The process for obtaining an Ag Access Pass will be discussed during the training. We strongly encourage all of our grape growers and vineyard management companies to go through this training and obtain an Ag Access Pass for your business in advance of the next emergency.
The training will include a welcome and brief overview by Assistant Sheriff Naugle and then facilitation from Ryan Petersen, Trainer & Volunteer Fire Fighter with CalFire. The Spanish classes will be facilitated by Ruben Mandujano, Fire Inspector/Engineer for Healdsburg Fire. These classes are designed to provide vineyard managers/owners and key personnel with a 4-hour fire zone safety training. This training will provide education and content on fireline hazards and strategies, entrapment avoidance, wildland personal protective equipment, vegetation management, traffic patterns and many others.
The training will better prepare and ensure the safety of key personnel if ever granted access to a vineyard property this is within a designated fire evacuation zone. Only employees who would be leading a crew or performing emergency agriculture business-related tasks should attend the training.
