Russian River Valley Zinfandel
Old-style vineyard about 1/2 mile north of Piner Road and west of Fulton Road on Alton Lane, head-pruned with vertical cordon for light and air. Heritage budwood grafted over from the Vera Gold Vineyard (which was located across the lane) c. 1995. Farmed for our own production at Ancient Oak Cellars. Our first vintage with this vineyard was 2010 and the wine was rated 91 pts. with Wine Spectator. We always have lots of natural acidity. Scores have been consistently strong since. The wine ages well. All that said, we are resonable in our expectations regarding price.
Here’s a quote from Dan Berger’s Vintage Experiences:
“This wine is a throwback to an earlier era when many Zinfandels carried a stamp of the old world. This claret-style wine has a subtle spice note amid a solid core of strawberry and loganberry fruit. Great acidity allows the wine to expand for a full day after opening, and display even more charm than on first pour.”
Harvest is late–mid-October. Because the vineyard is small and we farm it ourselves, we can be meticulous about leaf-pulling and green drops, so the fruit is very consistent in ripeness and clean at harvest. My own crew does the pruning and canopy management and I do all the spraying and/or dusting.
